Energy Consumption

We are committed to continuing to reduce our environmental impact through efficient and effective process design, production and operational sustainability. Our key focus within our operations is on energy efficiency and increasing the use of green energy to power our plants. We are on target to achieve 30% of our energy consumption from green energy by 2023.

We have been calculating our Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions since 2008 and continue to monitor the impact of our actions on reducing these emissions. We are now collecting robust data on our Scope 3 emissions to inform our future action plans on reducing emissions in our supply chain.

Products and packaging

We have high impact product sustainability targets for 2025 and we are tracking our progress against these. This programme is based on four key pillars: reduction in the use of plastics, plastic recycling, product compaction and responsible sourcing.

We offer customers more recyclable options for their packaging portfolio, using our sustainable packaging design guidelines and are seeking to eliminate the use of PVC, which is a hard-to-recycle plastic material and are making good progress towards replacing this with a recyclable mono PE laminate. We are also working hard to increasing the percentage of post-consumer recycled content in our plastic packaging.

In addition, we are focused on improving and further developing eco-accreditation for our product portfolio. McBride supports the eco scheme registrations for approximately 60 retail/contract customers, helping these organisations increase the sustainability profile of their products.

Water and waste management

Water is a key raw material for many of our products and we are focused on reducing our water usage in operations and compacting our product formulations to reduce water content. Our level of waste water is considered low and while none of our operations are in areas of water shortage, we continue to explore new ways of reducing our water usage.

Our current ambition is to continually reduce the percentage of overall waste we produce and to target zero waste going to landfill by 2025. In the past twelve months we have reduced the waste we send to landfill by 16% and are dedicated to improving this.
